WHAT IS CULTURAL APPRECIATION?

As the world becomes more globalized and integrated, humans are exposed to a wide variety of cultures. The more access people have to various cultures, the more appreciation they show toward them.

In fact, culture is the material and spiritual values of spare time, which are voluntarily handed down by the social community from generation to generation through the chain of events in daily life. It is clear that culture is the lifeblood of a vibrant society and cultural appreciation always takes an essential role in human society. Basically, cultural appreciation is a process of cultural exchange when two sides are able to accept, comprehend and respect one another's cultures while also giving the approval to engage in a certain culture.

There are various examples of how people appreciate each other’s culture in reality. For instance, in 2010, Angelina Jolie traveled to Pakistan and wore a Hijab, also known as a Muslim headscarf. She donned the hijab because it is a significant part of Pakistani culture and she wanted to show respect for her surroundings and maintain some modesty.

The other real example of cultural appreciation is Osklen, a Brazilian sportswear brand, based its spring 2016 collection on the Asháninka, an indigenous tribe that lives in the rainforests of Brazil and Peru. The tribe was then compensated by the business for allowing the use of traditional fabrics and tattoos, among other cultural elements, in its collection. From that point, the Asháninka people were able to construct a school and start a shop to sell their handcrafted goods thanks to the funding.

From the above examples, the importance of cultural appreciation is undoubtable. Cultural appreciation can bring a lot of advantages including creating social cohesion, decreasing prejudices and discrimination, maintaining a peaceful and harmonious relationship, and providing opportunities to facilitate cultural exchange. All of these written benefits have an appropriate impact on every country’s development.

In conclusion, cultural appreciation is a worthy action to be preserved and maintained. By sharing cultural history, heritage, and tradition, people can have a better understanding of each nation’s characteristics and easily connect together so as to help each other develop in prosperous countries.
